- Khrushchev, Nikita Sergeyevich
(1894–1971)
Politician. Nikita Khrushchev served as chairman of the
Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) from 1953 to 1964, making him the de facto leader of the
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). He conducted a partial de-Stalinization of the country, oversaw major advances in the country’s
space program, backed the erection of the Berlin Wall, and expanded the scope of the
Cold War to Latin America, Africa, and other parts of the globe. His ill-conceived Virgin Lands project wreaked havoc on
agriculture and the
environment in
Kazakhstan and the
Altay region. He did not die in office, but was instead removed by a group of senior CPSU figures, including
Leonid Brezhnev, his successor. He died of a heart attack on 11 September 1971.
